Criteria for Growth of the Angled Crack
SourceMixed mode fracture in two dimensions has been of recent interest via study of a crack at an arbitrary angle to the axis of applied load. Three criteria for growth under tensile loads are reviewed and, although they proceed on distinct bases, give similar results. A corollary to a minimum energy hypothesis is inferred. A compression model is suggested and examined in terms of two criteria. Comparisons to data, to the extent they are available, are considered; observations on the nature of the data are followed by suggestions for further research.
