The most important factors of any reactor pressure vessel surveillance program are: (1) it provides for the irradiation of steel from the actual pressure vessel, (2) the irradiation location is as close as physically possible to the vessel wall with the irradiation temperature and neutron spectrum duplicating those for the reactor vessel. These criteria thus provide a very useful measure of the value to be vested in the results of each reactor vessel surveillance program discussed.
