Matrix Cracking in Short Fiber Reinforced Composites under Static and Fatigue Loading
SourceMatrix crack initiation and accumulation have been characterized in SMC R25 and R50 and injection-molded reinforced thermoplastics under static and fatigue loading. The following topics are presented and discussed: (1) crack initiation S-N curves of composites, (2) crack density measurements for composites during fatigue and at failure, and (3) acoustic emission response of the matrices and composites during static loading. The effects of matrix toughening by rubber modification are described for SMC R25. The nature of damage initiation, development, and interaction with fibers is described for the various materials.
