Hybrid-Fiber-Reinforced Sheet Molding Compound Composite
SourceThis paper presents an analytical method of determining the effective stiffness properties of hybrid-fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) composites and of tailoring desired hybrid composites for design applications. Results are presented specifically for a chopped carbon/glass hybrid-SMC that is suitable for high-volume automotive production. The stiffness properties and material costs are computed and illustrated as functions of total fiber content and percent of carbon fibers. Also presented are material costs for the complete family of carbon/glass hybrid-SMC having equal Young's modulus.
