Weldability Testing of Cast Corrosion-Resistant and Heat-Resistant Steels
SourceA program to establish baseline hot-cracking sensitivities of cast corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant alloys was initiated. The Varestraint Test was used to investigate primarily the metallurgical variables associated with hot cracking in autogenous weldments of alloys CF8M and HK-40. Hot cracking in alloy HK is associated with the formation of a carbide-austenite lamellar eutectic. Hot cracking in alloy CF8M is a function of the primary solidification mode. Heats which by virtue of their composition solidify as primary austenite are more hot-crack sensitive than heats which solidify as primary δ-ferrite.
