Hydrogen Attack in Thick-Section 2¼Cr-1Mo Steels at Elevated Temperatures

Source

Changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of a 2¼Cr-1Mo steel under the influence of hydrogen attack at elevated temperatures were investigated. Evidence of methane bubble formation at grain boundary carbides was established by direct transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations. The stress-to-rupture life was found to be significantly reduced for hydrogen-exposed specimens. A new approach for data correlation in the form of Nelson curves as a function of stress is proposed.
