The Influence of Tooling Temperature on the Formability of Stainless Steel Sheets

The effect of small changes in tooling temperature on the press-forming performance of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels is described. It is shown that draw depths can be increased and breakage eliminated by warming the die and cooling the punch components of the tooling. The largest improvement occurs in the austenitic steels, since the effect of temperature on strength (and therefore formability) is enhanced by increased control over the transformation of austenite to ferrite.

The technique is being used to prevent breakage in the automotive and appliance industries, and a brief description of three typical applications is included.
