The design of exit doors to meet the requirements of security, fire safety, and building operations necessitates analysis based on building occupancy. Recent Canadian research has led to clearer understanding of building operations for specific occupancies such as spectator, educational, and correctional facilities. The result is a strategy designed to resolve conflicting requirements, but it depends on the availability of appropriate hardware and management procedures.
