In the Preface it was stated that the scope of this book is limited to exclude the subject of statistics. That exclusion needs to be refined here. A more exact statement would have been that the discussion of statistics will be limited to that which is basic to the establishment of quality management systems–in this chapter, to that which is basic to the establishment of acceptance sampling systems (those used in quality control as contrasted to those used in marketing research or public opinion polling).
