The main thrust of a research program being undertaken is the development, testing, and field verification of a battery of tests for measuring the environmental impact of effluents of variable and unknown composition, especially those meeting the effluent guidelines. These include short lethal tests, short nonlethal tests, tests that will estimate safe concentrations, behavioral tests, tainting tests, and measurements of chemical groups relatable to residue formation and toxicity. These tests will be available for use by dischargers to monitor their effluents and for use as discharge permit requirements. Some of the major problems involved in biologically evaluating complex effluents are duscussed as well as areas for additional research.
