Prior to 1960 most cast iron soil pipe joints were caulked with lead and oakum. Today the vast majority of such joints are sealed with rubber gaskets. Over 64 million such gaskets were used in the United States in 1972. Much of the success of these sealants can be attributed to the development and implementation of standard specifications for both pipe and gaskets. Plumbing industry satisfaction has been enhanced by the economy, compactness, ease of installation, and reliability of these joint sealants. Residents in apartments, homes, and other dwellings appreciate the great reduction in plumbing system noise effected by the cast iron soil pipe gasketed systems.
