Prediction of Critical Crack Size in Plastically Strained Welded Panels
SourceFracture toughness data for two HY80 weld metals are used to illustrate the application of Jc as a fracture analysis parameter in a form analogous to that developed in the United Kingdom for critical crack-tip opening displacement, c, testing and analysis. Jc results from dynamically tested, shallow-surface-notched, welded bend specimens are shown to correlate well with the crack size and plastic strain levels required to initiate unstable fracture in fatigue-cracked Pellini bulge explosion test panels. Jc is shown to be a clear function of crack depth for shallow cracks in bending. The use of Jc data from conventional deeply notched bend specimens results in very conservative critical crack size predictions.
