Wear Testing—Correlation with End-Use Performance

The failure modes of a plastic involved in sliding motion are presented. The mechanisms of loss of plastic material by wear are discussed. These mechanisms include adhesive wear, in which the transfer-back transfer process occurs, abrasive wear in which loose debris particles are produced directly from the sliding action, fatigue wear which is often the mechanism by which transferred films wear, and degradation wear which results from interface temperatures high enough to decompose the plastic. Common tests, such as the abrasive wear test (ASTM D 1242-69) and the Pressure Velocity (PV) test are described, and the limitations in correlation with end use are noted. Suggestions are made which will improve the correlation between tests and end use.
