Influence of the Geometry on Unstable Crack Extension and Determination of Dynamic Fracture Mechanics Parameters
SourceThe dynamic fracture toughness of the high-strength steel VCN-100 (UNI 38 NiCrMo4) is derived from tests on TPB 9 (three-point-bend) specimens. A wide range of crack velocities was obtained by changing the ER (energy ratio) of the specimen at crack instability; the crack velocity was evaluated from load versus time records during crack propagation. The results show a dependence of KID on crack velocity in good agreement with literature data.
