Atmospheric Corrosion of Electroplated Zinc Alloy Die Castings
SourceThe effect of electroplating variables on atmospheric corrosion of copper, nickel, and chromium electroplates on zinc alloy die castings was investigated at mobile and stationary test sites. More than 3000 electroplated die castings were exposed on Detroit, Michigan, trucks; Youngstown, Ohio, trucks; New York City tugboats; Detroit, Michigan, roof tops; and Kure Beach, North Carolina, 245-m (800-ft) lot, for periods of up to 10 years. Exposure to mobile test sites provided a valuable supplement to the more conventional stationary test site. The application of microdiscontinuous chromium proved to be the most influential factor for improved corrosion resistance.
