A comparison of the cost of using composite materials comprises many considerations relative to the cost of using a conventional monolithic material for the same application. These cost factors include cost of raw materials, cost of processing materials into composite preforms where required, cost of fabricating structures, cost savings which result from reductions in structural weight, savings in dead weight, and weight/cost reductions which derive from optimization and simplification of designs to establish lowest cost approaches for providing high performance structures.
