Chapter 5—Properties of Composite Materials

Source

Composite materials offer a combination of strength and stiffness properties quite superior to similar properties of conventional metallic structural materials. Table 5.1 lists representative values where specific strengths and moduli are markedly superior to the metallic materials. The graphite composite data relate to the use of a high modulus fiber reinforcement. Correspondingly, the superior mechanical properties are obtained only at the expense of marked reduction in tensile elongation. The latter deficiency must be accommodated in the design of specific structures.
