Storage and Disposal of Oily Waste in Alaska
SourceDisposal of waste oil and oily debris is a key factor in any spill cleanup activity as well as a day-to-day operational problem. The environmental conditions encountered in Alaska, such as tundra, permafrost, and arctic climate, often require modifications of current state-of-the-art disposal methods employed in other regions. This presentation gives an overview of the methods of storage and disposal of waste oil products presently utilized in Alaska. Because of the limited data base available, this paper does not cover in any detail the quantities of oil handled by any single technique or the costs involved. The summary includes recommendations for future research and demonstration projects.
