This paper discusses the nature of the variability of the tensile properties of aluminum alloys, the part this variability plays in establishing guaranteed properties, and the problem of establishing sampling plans in specifications that would provide in themselves a high degree of assurance that all the material accepted under such plans meets the established guaranteed properties.
