Posttensioning of concrete for various uses has been standard practice in the construction industry for many years. The engineering principles are well-known. The design of tensioned stone panels utilizes these same principles, and the advantages of posttensioned stone are much the same as for concrete. Most applications to date have been for cladding only. This paper is essentially a summary of experiences on projects utilizing posttensioned units of Indiana limestone for which the author developed the posttensioned designs and plant procedures. It is not intended to be a design manual but to provide a few guidelines for use in adapting well-known posttensioning methods to the design of natural stone units. This paper includes information on design loads, tendon design, allowable stresses, epoxy joints between stones, gravity and retention connections, grouting, fabrication, handling, storage, and transport considerations. It also includes case histories of projects.
