Fatigue Crack Growth in an Al O Short Fiber Reinforced Al-2Mg Alloy
SourceMetal matrix composites (Al-2Mg) reinforced with 10% by volume “Saffil” fibers were manufactured by a pressure infiltration technique. The initiation and growth of fatigue cracks in these composites were investigated by two methods.
Fatigue crack initiation and early crack growth were studied in smooth four-point bend specimens using replication techniques. The mechanisms of crack initiation were interpreted in terms of fiber interactions.
Fatigue crack growth behavior for long cracks was studied on CT-specimens. The long crack growth data for stress ratios R = 0. 05 and 0. 5 were correlated by incorporating measured values of crack closure into an effective driving force, ΔKeff.
