Evaluation of Airborne Dust Measurement Methods for Agricultural Chemical Carriers
SourceDue to the environmental and safety concerns in the manufacturing and handling of toxic chemicals on inert carriers, the determination of the airborne dust from such materials is of interest. Therefore, a variety of airborne dust measurement methods have been studied to determine which ones are best suited for determining the dustiness of agricultural chemical carriers, and possibly serve as the basis for an ASTM standard procedure. The measurement techniques evaluated include light absorption, light scattering, gravimetric, and a charge transfer technique. The methods were evaluated for the following characteristics: ease of use, reliability, equipment required, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Descriptions of the equipment and techniques along with data are presented. Comments are made as to the appropriateness of the methods for determining airborne dust or comparing the dustiness of various carriers.
