Non-chemically modified cornstarch effectively encapsulates herbicides. Aqueous gelatinization of starch at high temperature followed by active agent addition, drying and grinding yields encapsulated products that release active agents slowly. The rate of release can be controlled by varying the starch type and particle size. Preliminary data from sand and soil columns with encapsulated herbicides show that these products offer potential in reducing groundwater contamination.
