for over a decade governments have been introducing laboratory accreditation schemes in support of their national quality campaigns. Review of national standards and measurement systems has taken place with international competitiveness in mind. The independent testing laboratory owner has been invited to join the voluntary club of accredited laboratories.

This paper describes the experiences of one independent laboratory organization with accredited laboratories in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Hong Kong and will also refer to the author's experiences as a member of national and international organizations involved in the development of systems for the assessment of testing and calibration services.
