Comparative Performance of Culigel Superabsorbent Polymer-Based Pesticide Formulations
SourceNonagglomerated (granules) or agglomerated (disquets) Culigel® Type IV or V superabsorbent polymer-pesticide compositions were evaluated against aquatic or terrestrial pests in a series of controlled-release bioassays. Bioactive agents included in the granular single-or joint-action pesticide formulations for use against mosquito larvae and/or aquatic weeds were bacteria or growth regulators and/or a herbicide. Bait-pesticide disquet formulations were evaluated against German cockroach nymphs or adults. Results of aquatic tests indicated that Culigel® Type IV granules can be used as single- or dual-product matrices for entrapment/encapsulation and prolonged controlled release of mosquito larvicides and/or herbicides. Comparative performance studies showed that single- or joint-action pesticide slow-release profiles from Culigel® Type IV granules were regulated or controlled in aquatic habitats by the type and concentration of a dispersant or two- or three-component dispersant complex. Long-term release of pesticides encapsulated within Culigel® Type V disquet formulations was demonstrated against immature and adult cockroaches.
