This paper reviews the construction and failure modes of two field-fabricated, traffic-bearing plaza deck waterproofing systems over various substrates. The study involved field review of the two installations, analysis of the inherent shortcomings and defects in each, and the replacement systems design process. Observed defects and component deterioration for each installation are analyzed and separated into the categories of design deficiency, material performance, improper installation or workmanship, and lack of or improper maintenance.

Available data from original construction plans and specifications as well as that obtained during field investigations and sampling during system demolition is presented.
