The use of natural and seminatural facilities for ice skating and ice hockey has increased because of many problems with artificial rinks, including energy, construction, insurance, and lack of financing. With the use of natural and seminatural facilities, there have been injuries and deaths resulting from improperly constructed facilities. This paper outlines the critical points that must be addressed in designating natural and seminatural facilities for ice hockey, ice skating, and other sports requiring ice as a playing surface.
