Eye and Face Injuries in High School Hockey: Cutting Down the Risks

In 1970, two out of every three hockey players suffered some type of facial injury. As a result of standards, certification of face protectors, and rules for mandatory protective equipment, eye, face, and dental injuries have almost been eliminated. This paper reviews how the modern athletic trainer coordinates the observance of the rules, the choice of protective equipment for the face and head, and monitoring of equipment adjustment for optimum performance and safety.
