Asthma and Nitrogen Dioxide: A Review of the Evidence

There exist significant gaps in our understanding of human health effects resulting from inhalation of low-level nitrogen dioxide. Controlled clinical studies provide an important approach for examining acute effects in potentially sensitive subgroups. Although the evidence is inconclusive in linking nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure with enhanced bronchoconstriction in asthmatics, a more consistent data base is emerging. As evaluation techniques improve, it is predicted that more significant changes in the range of 0.30 ppm NO₂ will be found.
