Durability, while an essential requirement for geotextiles, is difficult to predict through testing. Since applications are so varied and field conditions so diverse, it is a formidable task to provide test data that can help the design engineer choose the correct engineering fabric (construction, weight, physical properties, etc.) for the intended application. Virtually all durability tests are “index” tests which allow the design engineer to compare the performance of different engineering fabrics, tested in an identical manner, and from these fabrics to select the geotextile that best meets his requirements.
