A Review of Existing Geotextile Tension Testing Methods

The review assesses the existing geotextile tension testing procedures in both North America and Europe with particular reference to the difference between the conditions of local and total stress imposition.

In local stress testing, the adaption of the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) soil test is described as a complement to the more commonly used Grab Test. The importance of the failure mode and fabric structure integrity under stress are also highlighted.

Attention is drawn in the unidirectional (total stress) test to the relevance of sample width, variation of strain rate, and the different definitions of modulus. Also, the requirement to relate tensile properties to a time base and a means of presenting these properties is shown.
