In experiments that examine the effects of chemicals on plant behavior, good design can overcome the difficulties imposed by limited resources. An appropriate design is one that obtains information about the interactions between and among factors, as well as the curvature, if any, in factor behavior. This paper outlines the chief concepts inherent in effective experimental design: purpose, objective, hypothesis, statistical power, treatment level determination, response variables, design structure, and replication.
