Ball Mill and Hub Test Methods for Slurry Erosion Evaluation of Materials
SourceAbrasive wear under wet sliding conditions can be very severe on alloy steels, not to mention expensive. Armco has developed an austenitic stainless steel called NITRONIC 30 having superior wear resistance compared to abrasion-resistant (AR) steels and most stainless steels. Two different laboratory tests were used to characterize the corrosive wear of these steels, a hub test and a ball mill test. Different corrodents of varying degrees of severity were used such as distilled water, synthetic sea water, synthetic nickel mine water, and a mixture of sodium chloride plus acetic acid. Other variables such as surface roughness and bulk hardness were also studied.
