Chemical Resistance Evaluation of Geosynthetics Used in Waste Management Applications

Geosynthetics, including membranes, geonets, geotextiles, geogrids and plastic pipes are finding increased use in waste management facilities. Their use has been prompted by design requirements for improved drainage, separation and barrier performance and economics to provide additional free air space. An important consideration in their use is their ability to withstand the potential chemical attack from the waste and leachate. This paper identifies an immersion procedure for exposing the materials and tests for evaluating the materials after exposure for those materials other than membranes. The paper also discusses fingerprinting.
