Dynamic Fracture Behavior of a Structural Steel
SourceFracture experiments are described in which stress wave loading is employed to attain a stress intensity rate of about 2 ∙ 106 MPa √m/s. The specimens consisted of prefatigued notched round bars of a high strength, low alloy martensitic steel. The tests covered the temperature range -150°C to 200°C. Comparison is made with corresponding results of quasistatic tests on specimens of the same geometry as well as with results of other investigators who tested similar steels. The present steel contains manganese sulfide inclusions in the form of stringers and globules. Their role in the fracture process is examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy.
