Health Reports as Facility Performance Measures: The Role Of Environmental and Occupational Factors in the Genesis of Building-Related Illness

The use of health reports as a metric for evaluating the performance of offices is examined. Assumptions about the associations between objective measures of ventilation and indoor air quality and subjective reactions are critically reviewed. Results from recent investigations of the “sick” building syndrome and evidence for a mediating role for demographic and occupational variables is described. Finally, issues of operationally defining performance criteria for offices based on health reports are discussed.
