Volatile Organic Analytical Methods Performance and Quality Control Considerations

The analysis of volatile organic compounds in hazardous waste samples from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund program is done by selected contractor laboratories using methods specified in the EPA Invitation to Bid document WA85-J664. Data for the precision and accuracy of the method is obtained from the quality assurance data in the Contract Laboratory Program database. Method precision is obtained from the results of matrix and surrogate spiking of the samples. Bias is obtained from the results of surrogate spiking, preaward samples, and quarterly blind quality assurance samples. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, varies from 8 to 16% while the bias varies from +6.5 to -46%.
