Water Penetration Testing of Single Wythe Residential Load-Bearing Clay Masonry Wall Systems

Summarized are the results of an investigation designed to evaluate the water penetration resistance of a variety of residential single wythe load bearing clay masonry exterior wall systems. A total of eighteen wall specimens were tested using the apparatus and procedures outlined in ASTM E 514. Six different wall configurations were evaluated, including variations in insulation, tie connectors, and moisture barriers. Also discussed are some of the construction procedures critical in the wall system performance, recommendations for detailing the system for optimum water resistance and the impact of these recommendations on the thermal and vapor resistance of the wall system.
