Mechanical Energy Dissipation Related with Martensitic Transformation Processes

The mechanics of dissipation processes caused by phase transformation phenomena, with special emphasis on the martensitic type of transformation, will be surveyed and illustrated with specific examples. Particular attention will be devoted to identifying the kind of information that can be obtained from damping measurements for the characterization of the behavior of materials and for understanding the basic mechanisms responsible for the intrinsic material damping.

Finally, the way in which such information can be used in the design of high damping materials and in the specification of the limiting application parameters will also be discussed.
