Performance of Protective Clothing: Development and Testing of Asbestos Substitutes

The origin of asbestos use is traced and its unique properties are discussed. A comparison of various substitutes available to replace asbestos shows that there is no single substitute. Development of an effective substitute from fiberglass is described. Lack of proper test methods for measuring the effectiveness of the substitutes in safety clothing required the development of new test methods, which are described. These tests show that Zetex, made from highly texturized fiberglass, offers insulation and strength properties superior to those of asbestos. Results of molten metal splash resistance tests on asbestos and Zetex and the effects of various treatments are discussed.
