Available image processing techniques can meet many of the needs for processing radiographs of materials. Low-contrast noisy images of materials can be processed by a sequence of operations which enhance signals that are otherwise barely discernible by eye. Trends in the background intensity can be removed, noise can be filtered, and the signal can be enhanced. Automatic feature extraction can then be applied. Computer requirements vary considerably with the sophistication of the process. More sophisticated techniques, which often are superior in performance, may require more computer time and memory.
