Corrugated Steel Culvert Application Methods Under the Railway, with Minimized Traffic Disruption—Two Case Studies

Culverts under a railway must be replaced when they reach the end of their service life or are damaged by factors such as earthquakes. In some cases, a new culvert is constructed in addition to keeping the existing culvert due to insufficient hydraulic capacity. During the culvert construction process on railways or highways, methods such as cut-and-cover excavations, tunnel-type constructions, and deep excavations can be used. Some of these methods are sometimes inadequate in terms of cost management and difficulty of implementation, as they will disrupt traffic flow on highway or railway lines with high traffic. For all these reasons, culvert construction may need to be completed without stopping railway or highway traffic or by minimizing the disruption. This paper introduces two different methods for the construction of corrugated steel structures under railway lines without stopping or minimizing disruption of the flow of train traffic and discusses their application in two different case studies. The first method is to follow the culvert application stages under the railway while the railway traffic continues by using temporary steel beams. The second method involves installing corrugated steel culverts in two separate stages—first the initial half, followed by the second half—by introducing a central support structure constructed using temporary sheet pile walls. The advantages of proposed construction methodologies are evaluated in the study, and two case studies are presented for both methods.
