Experiences Using ASTM E3076-18 to Analyze Uniaxial Tensile Data

Source

ASTM E3076-18 is the Standard Practice for Determination of the Slope in the Linear Region of a Test Record (superseded). This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the standard practice when processing uniaxial tensile test data. While the method works well for ideal test datasets with a pronounced linear-elastic region, minimal compliance, and low noise, the correct linear-elastic region was only identified 75% of the time for the test records analyzed in this report. This study discusses the vulnerabilities of ASTM E3076-18 and offers potential revisions to the standard practice that improved the effectiveness of the method for 95% for the uniaxial tensile data inspected in the study. The overall conclusion is that ASTM E3076-18 is an exceptionally useful tool that could be beneficial to a wide array of applications both within the material science field and in the wider scientific community, but that the procedure lacks the level of robustness and runtime efficiency that is desired for production applications.
