Initiation of Kindling Chain from Rapid Compression
SourceThe ignition of a nonmetal due to rapid compression may initiate a kindling chain effect in gaseous oxygen by igniting surrounding materials. This ignition can result in catastrophic consequences, including lost resources, systems, and functionality and the loss of human lives. The burn rate (BR) and heat release rate (HRR) of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Nylon 6/6 were investigated at five preselected oxygen test pressures to better understand the events that lead to a kindling chain. The BR and HRR of these two materials were determined by characterizing the time from ignition to extinguishment. Constant consumption rates were assumed. The results from the investigation provide unique information regarding the kindling of surrounding material from nonmetal ignition. This research shows that the Nylon 6/6 samples burned slower than the PTFE samples and released approximately four times the energy released from the PTFE samples at a given pressure. Therefore, a kindling chain reaction would be more likely to occur from the ignition of a Nylon 6/6 material.
