Hybrid Steel and Its Potential for Bearing Applications

A novel bearing alloy has been designed utilizing the combination of alloy carbides and intermetallic precipitation hardening. The addition of nickel and aluminum to the steel not only increases the hardness via order strengthening with the precipitation of nickel aluminide but is also found to promote synergy precipitation hardening by limiting the precipitation coarsening of chromium (Cr) carbide. The aluminum content in the steel also promotes the formation of the passive layer in the steel that contains 5 wt.% Cr. It is called Hybrid Steel and is commercially produced by Ovako; it is designed to offer long bearing life and to operate at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, it has the potential to be used in corrosive and hydrogen environments.
