In a world of increasing weed, insect, fungi, bacteria, and nematode resistance, the use of pesticides with different modes of action is the main strategy to prevent these issues. Glufosinate is becoming more important in weed control programs to deal with glyphosate resistance. Tank mix adjuvants are important tools for providing favorable physical chemical properties and boosting active herbicide biological activity. Spreader-sticker adjuvants improve wetting and spreading of the droplets on the leaf, as well as retention of such droplets, enabling other important positive effects such as adhesion. As a contact herbicide, glufosinate could benefit from a spreader-sticker adjuvant use. On the other hand, the main tank mix adjuvants being used with glufosinate are ammonium sulfate (AMS) in the United States and crop oil in Brazil. The objective of this research was to evaluate glufosinate performance when applied with three categories of tank mix adjuvants: AMS, spreader-sticker, and crop oil. The main methodologies used in this study were dynamic surface tension, contact angle on a hard-to-wet leaf surface, and bioefficacy in a greenhouse to control Palmer amaranth and broadleaf signalgrass in Mississippi. The spreader-sticker resulted in the lowest contact angle and surface tension, while all three categories enhanced glufosinate bioefficacy. Crop oils and spreader-stickers are crucial alternative tools to improve the herbicide performance, especially in cases where AMS is not desirable in certain spray mixes due to volatility or compatibility issues.
