Effects of Weatherproofing Sealants on Building Aesthetics — Part II
SourceThe paper describes several sealant related phenomena which can contribute to building aesthetic problems. These include sealant dirt pick-up, fluid streaking on a substrate (staining), and fluid migration into porous substrates. The paper postulates mechanisms for these phenomena and suggests appropriate test methods to assess them. The paper also presents long-term weathering results obtained on 12 weatherproofing sealants selected from the following generic types: plasticized silicones, unplasticized silicones, unplasticized surface-modified silicones, plasticized polyurethanes, unplasticized polyurethanes and plasticized silicon modified polyethers. In order to address the influence of local environment and exposure conditions, sealants are exposed at a rural site in Georgia and an industrial site in Michigan.
