A Comparison of Different Sealant Butt Joint Shapes
SourceThis paper reviews the evolution of the butt sealant joint from the deep rectangular joints used in early highway seals to the hourglass shapes used presently in building seals. The paper compares the relative performance of several types of butt sealant joints, including square, rectangular, and hourglass. The performance measures include tensile and cyclic laboratory tests and finite element analyses. The paper compares the performance of hourglass joints in recent tests to the performance of butt joints with other shapes presented in previous publications. These data can assist ASTM Committee C-24 in evaluating the effect of joint shape on the performance of specimens in tensile adhesion or cyclic tests.
