Fretting Corrosion and Modularity: A Critical Review of the Literature and Three Registries
SourceFretting corrosion (mechanically assisted corrosion) is commonly found at retrieval analysis of Morse-type taper junctions in modular devices. The exact prevalence is difficult to precisely quantify, but it has been estimated to be present in 10 to 100 % of retrieval specimens, based on a literature review. The extent or severity of corrosion damage is variable and appears to be dependent on such factors as alloy composition of the fretting couple; physical factors, such as moment or lever arm, femoral head diameter, and time of implantation; and various design aspects of the taper.
