Flat Washer Test Practice—Statistical Analysis
SourceThe flat washer test used by some bearing producers is well known as it allows checking the quality of steels. This work proposes to characterize two distinct aspects of the test. In the first part, the statistical method used to evaluate the result is analyzed. In fact, the sudden death method has been used for a long time. The test requires 50 samples, distributed in 5 groups. The question we propose to answer is the following: does the sample distribution in the groups influence the test result? Therefore, an experimental test and a simulation method were used. The FB2 test has been designed to generate subsurface initiated spalling, to rate steel quality. After spalling, the sample is broken to investigate the initiation site. In the second part of the work, 20 years of investigations are analyzed to check the origin of the damage.
